Crohn’s and Colitis Canada raises $3.2 million during their largest single-day fundraiser
TORONTO, Ont. – June 6, 2016 – On Sunday June 5th, 2016, nearly 23,000 took part in Canada’s largest event committed to raising funds for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. In 60+ communities across the country, Canadians showed loved ones living with these chronic diseases that they are not alone. All participants walked together to stop the pain, multiple surgeries, and the missed moments that people with Crohn’s and colitis live with.
Organized by local volunteer committees, GUTSY WALK is a fun and healthy way to support loved ones, friends and colleagues living with Crohn’s and colitis (the two main forms of inflammatory bowel disease). Crohn’s and Colitis Canada volunteers work throughout the year to educate their communities about these devastating diseases, and to raise funds for much-needed research and patient programs that will improve the lives of children and adults, and ultimately find the cures.
“Many people with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis feel very isolated; GUTSY WALK is an opportunity for Canadians living with inflammatory bowel disease to see just how large and powerful a community we truly are, both locally and nationally,” said Mina Mawani, President & CEO of Crohn’s and Colitis Canada. Mawani, who was part of the Halton Gutsy Walk in Oakville, added, “This 21st annual GUTSY WALK for Crohn’s and Colitis Canada raised $3.2 million to stop these diseases. We are very grateful to the many participants, sponsors, donors and volunteers who made this day so successful!”
While the event was successful, there are still funds to be collected after inclement weather in several areas of the country. Mawani said, “We can still reach our goal of $3.5 million with help – GUTSY WALK participants have until July 4th to submit pledges and to do more fundraising. The funds raised for Gutsy Walk play a critical role in determining our support of world-class research here in Canada and for patient programs, advocacy and awareness that improve lives today.”
Canadians have more reasons to be concerned about Crohn`s disease and ulcerative colitis than anyone else in the world. Canada is the world’s hotspot for Crohn’s and colitis and no one knows why. One in 150 Canadians has Crohn’s or colitis – a rate that ranks among the highest worldwide. Even more alarming is the rate at which children are being diagnosed: Crohn’s disease has doubled in kids under 10 years old since 1995. Families new to Canada are developing Crohn’s and colitis for the first time – often within the first generation.
Crohn’s and Colitis Canada is committed to advancing care for Canadians living with these devastating, lifelong diseases. Money raised at GUTSY WALKs across the country will be used to help support important and unprecedented initiatives from Crohn’s and Colitis Canada such as the PACE Network and the GEM Project. PACE is a new, national network of IBD centres aiming to elevate and standardize patient care across the country. The GEM Project is an international research study initiated by Crohn’s and Colitis Canada that is our best hope to identify the triggers for Crohn’s disease.
The funds raised in the GUTSY WALK go towards the Crohn’s & Colitis – Make it stop. For life. Campaign to raise $100 million by 2020 to transform lives. With Gutsy Walk on Sunday June 5th, we are now at 43% of our goal! Gutsy Walk is continuing to collect event pledges until July 4th.
