Thank you to everyone who supported the 28th annual Gutsy Walk for Crohn's and Colitis Canada!

It was wonderful to see the community out across the country raising awareness for both Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

Kyle and Nathaniel Brown
Winnipeg, Manitoba

Like most people, getting diagnosed (at 15) caught Kyle by surprise. His weight plummeted, and it took doctors over a year to finally confirm his Crohn’s disease. After numerous surgeries over the past 26 years he’s been living with Crohn’s, Kyle is now living with an ileostomy and loving life. He gets to spend time with his kids and keep up with his hobbies.

Kyle is thankful for the great amount of support he gets from his son Nathaniel, who started raising money for Gutsy Walk by selling cookies and lemonade and has since received the Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee medal in Manitoba for his work in fundraising.

Kyle and Nathaniel have been long-time Gutsy Walk supporters, and their team Farter Knows Best, is ready for an awesome 2023 year!

Vanessa Percoco
Montreal, Quebec

Life with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is often non-linear. Ups and downs are frequent, and uncertainty is persistent. Like Kyle, Vanessa was also diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at 15 and has had an upward battle ever since. What started as cramping and diarrhea has since grown into a diagnosis of Crohn’s-related colon cancer on top of Crohn’s itself.

Throughout it all, Vanessa has been passionate about being an advocate and raising awareness for all of those impacted by IBD. In her words: “I felt like I really needed to take my place and to help other people like me.”

Percoco Team will once again be back for this year’s Gutsy Walk—and Vanessa will be there to lead them into once again making a huge impact for our cause!

Edden

In 2017, I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, which was both a relief and an obstacle. I was glad to finally know what was causing my symptoms but was afraid of what the future might hold. But what better way to navigate my journey towards a cure than by joining my local Gutsy Walk organizing committee? This allowed me to build a network of support and to connect with others affected by IBD in my community. I’m excited to walk alongside all of you to raise awareness and funds for Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis at this year’s Gutsy Walk!

Georgina

I participated in last year's Gutsy Walk spur of the moment. When my plans were canceled, I wondered what I could do. A beautiful day spent raising money for a cause that is important to me seemed like a plan. It gave me time to reflect on my journey with ulcerative colitis. For the 2023 Gutsy Walk, I look forward to having a team and being part of the great group here in Prince George.

Gordon

My name is Gordon, and I have Crohn’s disease. In the summer of 2019, I spent a month in the hospital after visiting the ER multiple times with worsening symptoms. After seeing the same GI as my sister, I was put on medication. Now in 2022, I’ve had a second surgery and am living with an ostomy bag. Since my surgery, I feel like I’ve got my life back. I’ve learned that I can handle pain a lot better than I thought. I participate in the Gutsy Walk because it’s nice to know I’m not the only person who’s struggled with this.

Jasmine

I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in February 2013, and it came with a bang! It stayed that way for four years until I received my permanent ileostomy in April 2017. I was later diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in January 2018, so I have a lot of experience with IBD! After regaining my health, I decided I wanted to raise awareness about IBD, and the Gutsy Walk is one of the best ways to do that! This will be my fourth year participating, and I can’t wait!
